OpenAI named Microsoft and Stripe as the first publicized enterprise customers for Codex, the agentic coding product. The shape of the deal matters more than the logos: usage-based pricing tied to merged PRs and successful task completions, not seat licenses. SOC 2 Type II is in place, which was the missing piece for most regulated buyers.

Two things to watch. First, whether the merged-PR billing model survives contact with reality , enterprise procurement teams will push back on metered AI for the same reasons they push back on metered cloud. Second, whether internal engineering teams adopt at the rate the demos imply; early reports from Microsoft suggest a 60-70% acceptance rate on small-to-medium changes, with humans still gating anything touching infrastructure.

This is the first enterprise coding-agent rollout at scale we can actually point at. The benchmark is set.
