OpenAI named Microsoft and Stripe as the first publicized enterprise customers for Codex, its agentic coding product. The logos are the press release. The deal shape is the actual news: usage-based pricing tied to merged PRs and successful task completions, not seat licenses. SOC 2 Type II is in place, which was the boring but load-bearing piece nobody could ship without.

Two things to watch, and one of them is going to be entertaining. First, whether the merged-PR billing model survives contact with an actual enterprise procurement team. These are the same people who spent five years demanding flat-rate cloud contracts because metered AWS bills made them nervous. Asking them to budget for “however many PRs the robot decides to write this quarter” is a vibe shift. Second, whether engineers adopt at demo speed once it’s actually in their stack. Early reports from Microsoft suggest a 60-70% acceptance rate on small-to-medium changes, with humans still gating anything touching infrastructure, because of course they are.

This is the first enterprise coding-agent rollout at scale we can point at without squinting. Benchmark is set. Everyone else is now selling against it.
